Montana roadways – Freezing rain could create hazardous travel conditions across portions of south-central Montana from Sunday into early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, periods of rain and snow showers are expected at lower elevations today into Monday, with pockets of freezing rain possible, especially near Big Timber and along major travel corridors. Even light freezing rain can cause roads to become slick rapidly.
The greatest concern is along Interstate 90, including areas from Livingston through Billings and east toward Hardin, as well as nearby highways. Forecast graphics show a moderate chance of freezing rain in some locations, with lower but notable probabilities extending east toward Miles City overnight into Monday morning.
Forecasters said icing may persist into the Monday morning commute in areas that experience freezing rain, increasing the risk for difficult driving conditions. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are most likely to become icy first.
No heavy snow is expected with this system, but the combination of light precipitation and near-freezing temperatures increases the potential for travel impacts despite limited accumulation.
Drivers with travel plans Sunday night into Monday are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. High-profile and light-weight vehicles should use additional caution.
Motorists are encouraged to check current road conditions before traveling by calling 511 or visiting 511mt.net.
