Chicago, IL – A quick-moving burst of wind-whipped snow is expected to impact the Wednesday morning commute across northern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago. The system will move through between 5 a.m. and noon CST, bringing brief but intense snow showers, gusty winds, and reduced visibility on major routes, including I-90 and I-94.

According to the NWS, commuters should prepare for two to four hours of snow, with localized accumulations near one inch and wind gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph from the northwest. The snow will be most concentrated across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, including Porter County.

Officials warn that the combination of gusty winds and light snow may create hazardous travel due to slick roads and limited visibility, especially during peak rush hour. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before heading out and to allow extra travel time.

This event follows the passage of a sharp cold front, ushering in colder air and briefly intense snow bands moving southeast across the region. Temperatures will drop through the day, with wind chills in the 20s expected by afternoon.

The NWS advises motorists to exercise caution and prepare for changing conditions through midday Wednesday.
