Binghamton, NY – Snow drifts across car hoods this morning as another round of lake-effect snow and biting winds sweeps through Central New York. The air feels raw — temperatures in the 20s and gusts up to 40 mph are making travel conditions tricky for early commuters.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, scattered snow showers and brief squalls are possible Thursday, especially from Cortland to Broome County and into the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Visibility could drop quickly under heavier bursts, and untreated roads may become slick in minutes.

Daytime highs will hover near 27°F, but wind chills in the teens will make it feel colder. Snow accumulation will generally stay light — less than an inch for most areas — but brief bursts could create hazardous driving near I-81 and Route 17. Drivers are urged to slow down and give extra space to plows.

Friday offers a short break with sunshine and calmer winds, but by Saturday, another weak clipper system will return snow chances to the region. The Great Lakes pattern remains active, meaning additional lake-effect snow is possible into early next week.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 11–15):

  • Friday: Mostly sunny, high 29°F.
  • Saturday: Snow showers, high 33°F.
  • Sunday: Snow showers likely, high 23°F.
  • Monday: Mostly cloudy, high 24°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, high 33°F.
