Nebraska skies over south-central communities are shifting quickly this morning as a narrow band of light snow and rain slides across the region. Wet pavement and brief flakes swirl across open fields near Hastings while winds tug at road signs and trees.

Conditions are improving as the system moves out, but drivers should remain cautious during the early commute. Light snow accumulation of less than half an inch may still linger on colder surfaces before skies begin clearing later this morning.

Across Adams County and nearby highways including U.S. 281 and Interstate 80, slick patches are possible in shaded areas. Plan extra travel time early today while road crews monitor conditions.

The weather pattern changes dramatically by Thursday.

Meteorologists are now tracking dangerous fire weather conditions developing across south-central Nebraska during the afternoon. Temperatures climb near 70°F, while southwest winds strengthen to 20 to 30 mph with gusts approaching 40 mph.

At the same time, humidity could drop as low as 15 percent, creating conditions where any spark could spread rapidly across dry grasslands.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Hastings and surrounding counties from noon through Thursday evening. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks.

The good news is that calmer weather returns heading toward Friday. Sunshine and cooler air settle in with highs near 55°F, bringing a quieter end to the workweek.

Looking ahead to the weekend of March 14–15, temperatures climb back into the mid-60s Saturday before another system could bring rain or snow showers Saturday night into Sunday.

Spring weather across the Plains is already showing its rapid swings — from snowflakes to fire danger in less than 48 hours.
