DES MOINES, Iowa – Central Iowa’s run of quiet fall weather will end soon as a storm system targets the region with showers, gusty winds, and possible thunderstorms late Friday into Saturday. Drivers and outdoor event planners along I-35 and I-80 should prepare for changing conditions heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, Thursday will stay mild and mostly sunny, with highs around 81°F. South winds will pick up Friday, gusting near 25 mph as humidity climbs. The first wave of scattered showers and a few thunderstorms could develop Friday afternoon, mainly west of Des Moines, expanding eastward through the evening.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few stronger storms could bring brief downpours and gusty winds Friday night. The highest rain chances arrive between 6 p.m. Friday and early Saturday morning, with totals near a half inch possible. Saturday will turn breezy and cooler, with lingering clouds early and highs in the mid-70s.

By Sunday, sunshine returns with comfortable highs in the mid-60s — ideal for fall festivals, tailgates, and pumpkin patch trips. Next week looks warmer again, with highs rebounding into the 80s by Tuesday before another system approaches midweek.

Residents should secure lightweight outdoor decorations and monitor updated travel conditions through Friday night.
