HASTINGS, NE – A blanket of dense fog settled across south-central Nebraska early Saturday, muting headlights and slowing traffic along I-80 and Highway 6. Visibility in parts of Adams and Clay Counties dropped below a quarter mile at dawn, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory from the National Weather Service through 11 a.m. Drivers are urged to use low beams and reduce speed until the fog lifts by late morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, skies will stay mostly cloudy through the day, with highs around 54°F. Patchy fog may linger into midmorning before light winds help clear the air. Sunday remains mostly dry and mild with highs near 57°F, but a developing low-pressure system from the southwest will increase clouds and moisture late in the day.
By Monday, rain becomes likely across south-central Nebraska, with showers building from Grand Island through Hastings and York. The heaviest activity should arrive during the late morning to afternoon commute, when gusty southeast winds could reduce visibility again in heavier downpours. Total rainfall of a quarter to half an inch is possible.
Residents should prepare for slower travel Monday and watch for ponding on rural roads. Those planning outdoor Halloween setups this weekend may want to secure decorations ahead of the rain and wind.
By Tuesday, cooler and partly cloudy weather returns, followed by clearer, colder nights midweek — a setup that could bring early frost chances by Wednesday morning.
After all, a chilly November lies ahead, and this fog-to-rain transition is the first sign of it.
