Hastings, Neb. – Rain is already transitioning to a rain-snow mix across eastern Nebraska, with slushy roads and reduced visibility expected before the Tuesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, precipitation chances climb as high as 99% overnight across eastern counties, including Omaha, Norfolk, and Columbus, with temperatures dropping between 27°F and 34°F. Light snow accumulation is possible, especially on grassy surfaces and elevated roadways, while central Nebraska sees lighter, more scattered impacts.

Drivers along Interstate 80 and Highway 81 should watch for slick spots on bridges and overpasses through 7 a.m. Tuesday. Winds from the east at 10 to 20 mph may also reduce visibility during heavier bursts of precipitation.

Conditions improve by late Tuesday morning as precipitation tapers off, followed by a sharp warm-up. Highs rebound into the upper 60s and 70s by Wednesday across much of the state, including Grand Island and Kearney.

That warm air sets the stage for the next system. Scattered showers and thunderstorms develop Wednesday evening, with a 40% chance of storms and a marginal risk for severe weather into the night. Storm chances increase further Thursday.

Residents should plan for a messy early commute, then prepare for rapidly changing conditions as Nebraska shifts from late-season snow to spring thunderstorms within 48 hours.
