Joliet, IL – Construction on the I-80 bridge over Midland Avenue begins this week, impacting traffic patterns and schedules. Motorists should expect lane closures and shifts on both I-80 and Midland Avenue during the work.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), crews will demolish the current bridge over the next three weeks. Demolition will occur around the clock and could generate significant noise. IDOT has urged residents and travelers to be patient while they expedite the work.

This project is part of IDOT’s ongoing effort to reconstruct 16 miles of I-80. The larger initiative aims to improve travel efficiency and reduce congestion. Crews will install new bridges designed to enhance safety and reduce maintenance needs.

The new bridges over Midland Avenue are expected to be completed by 2026. In the meantime, drivers should remain alert for changing traffic patterns and use alternate routes if possible.
