Quad Cities, IA/IL – Travel remains dangerous across much of Iowa and Illinois Saturday afternoon as snow and ice cover nearly all major roads, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities.
The latest update shows Interstate 80 and surrounding highways remain slick or fully snow-covered, with limited improvement expected until snowfall tapers off. Traffic cameras along I-80 captured near-whiteout conditions Saturday afternoon, underscoring widespread travel hazards.
Officials report that road crews are actively plowing and treating major routes, but the sheer extent of snow and ice coverage is slowing progress. Drivers are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to expect reduced visibility and icy surfaces on both highways and secondary roads.
The Iowa DOT 511 map indicates “completely covered” conditions across large sections of eastern Iowa, extending into northwestern Illinois, while neighboring states report similar conditions as the storm spreads eastward.
Authorities remind motorists to check 511ia.org or gettingaroundillinois.com for the latest travel information and to use extreme caution if driving is unavoidable.
