OMAHA, Neb. — A powerful early-season winter storm is set to impact eastern Nebraska and western Iowa late Friday through Saturday, bringing a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and heavy snow that could make travel dangerous through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning covers areas from Wayne to Fort Dodge, with a Winter Weather Advisory stretching south toward Omaha, Lincoln, and Nebraska City. Light freezing rain is expected to develop by Friday afternoon, turning to snow overnight into Saturday. Even small amounts of ice may quickly make roads slick and treacherous.
Snow totals will vary widely: 6 to 10 inches are forecast across northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa, including Sioux City and Storm Lake, while 2 to 6 inches are expected along I-80 from Lincoln to Council Bluffs. Slight temperature changes could sharply shift totals near the rain-snow line, forecasters said.
Winds will strengthen Saturday, producing blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility, particularly in open areas north of Omaha.
Travelers are urged to check 511.nebraska.gov or 511ia.org for real-time road conditions, allow extra time, and carry emergency kits if driving.
Forecasters expect conditions to gradually improve Sunday as the system exits east, though slick roads may linger into early Monday.
