Pennsylvania – Rain taps roofs and roads early this morning, but winter is waiting just behind it. Winds strengthen fast today, temperatures fall sharply, and snow squalls could flip travel conditions in minutes across western Pennsylvania.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Wind Advisory remains in effect through early Tuesday morning. West winds increase to 25 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. As colder air surges in, rain changes to snow showers and brief squalls this afternoon and evening.
In Pittsburgh, temperatures start mild near the lower 60s early, then tumble through the 40s and 30s by afternoon. Gusty winds combine with sudden snow bursts to reduce visibility quickly. Drivers on I-79, I-376, Route 28, and elevated bridges should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Snow squalls may coat roads quickly, even with little accumulation.
By evening, the cold deepens. Blowing snow and falling temperatures could lead to flash freezing where rain lingers on pavement. Tree limbs may come down in stronger gusts, and isolated power outages remain possible.
Tuesday stays cold and unsettled. Spotty snow showers linger, with highs near the upper 20s. Wind chills bite during the morning commute. By Wednesday, another round of snow becomes more likely late, with accumulating snow possible into Wednesday night as New Year’s Eve approaches.
New Year’s Day 2026 looks quieter but cold. Highs hover in the mid-20s, and any untreated roads could stay slick early. Winter travel conditions remain a concern across the region through the end of the week.
