I-69 near Fort Wayne, Indiana – Travel along Interstate 69 and surrounding highways could become hazardous this weekend as a winter storm brings accumulating snow followed by several days of dangerously cold temperatures to northern Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a potentially significant winter storm is expected to affect the region from Saturday afternoon through Sunday night, with confidence highest that areas along and south of U.S. 24, including Fort Wayne, could experience moderate winter impacts.

Forecast guidance shows a 30–50% chance of moderate impacts from snowfall in the Fort Wayne area, depending on the storm’s exact track. Snow may begin Saturday afternoon, becoming more impactful Saturday night into Sunday as temperatures fall and road conditions deteriorate. While exact snowfall totals remain uncertain, forecasters warn that travel impacts could increase quickly if heavier snow bands shift north.

Major roadways including I-69, I-469, U.S. 30, and U.S. 24 could see snow-covered pavement and reduced visibility, particularly Sunday. Even lighter snow amounts may create problems as frigid air overspreads the region, limiting road treatment effectiveness.

In addition to snowfall, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect late tonight into Friday afternoon, with wind chills as low as 15 to 25 degrees below zero. Bitter cold is expected to persist through the weekend, increasing the risk of icy spots and vehicle issues during and after the storm.

Drivers are urged to monitor forecast updates closely, avoid unnecessary travel during peak impact periods, and allow extra time if travel is unavoidable.

Commuters, students, and weekend travelers using I-69 through Fort Wayne should prepare for changing road conditions and potential delays.
