Birmingham, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham has issued a Freezing Fog Advisory for parts of central Alabama through 8 a.m. Wednesday, warning drivers of dangerously reduced visibility and potential icy conditions on bridges and overpasses.

According to the NWS, visibilities could drop below ¼ mile, with light ice accumulation possible where surface temperatures remain below freezing. The advisory covers southeastern portions of central Alabama, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Clanton, and Montgomery.

“Freezing fog will make travel hazardous during the early morning commute,” the agency cautioned. “Minor ice accumulation is possible on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.”

Residents are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance when driving. Officials also recommend delaying travel if possible until temperatures rise above freezing and fog begins to dissipate later in the morning.

Freezing fog occurs when supercooled water droplets freeze upon contact with cold surfaces, leading to slick and nearly invisible ice patches, particularly dangerous for morning commuters.

The advisory is expected to expire by 8 a.m., but some icy spots may linger in shaded or elevated areas until late morning. The rest of the day will see partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees.

Motorists traveling along Interstate 65 and Highway 82 should remain alert to changing road conditions. Visibility may fluctuate quickly, and untreated roads could be deceptively slick even as temperatures begin to rise.
