VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The early calm along the coast won’t last. A soft salt breeze stirs the dunes this morning, but clouds already build to the west. By nightfall, those clouds will bring gusty winds and streaks of rain sweeping off the Atlantic — a brief but potent reminder that fall weather along the Virginia coast can change fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, southerly winds could reach 25 to 35 mph today, strongest near the shoreline and across open bridges. A line of showers and isolated thunderstorms is expected late this evening as a cold front pushes through. A few of the stronger storms may produce wind gusts up to 40 mph, especially across Hampton Roads and inland toward Suffolk and Chesapeake. Drivers along I-64 and Route 13 should be ready for slick pavement and sudden bursts of wind through midnight.

By early Monday, drier air will sweep in quickly, leaving clear skies and brisk northwest winds. Sunshine dominates Monday and Tuesday with highs near the upper 60s to low 70s — perfect for outdoor work or fall cleanup.

Midweek remains calm and bright, though cooler mornings will settle in by Thursday and Friday. Lows will dip into the low 50s, with hints of upper 40s inland — a gentle nod toward late October’s seasonal shift. After tonight’s gusty front, coastal Virginia enters a stretch of picture-perfect fall weather, ideal for early Halloween decorating or an afternoon by the water.
