Chicago, Illinois – Isolated thunderstorms could spark dangerous driving conditions south of Chicago this evening, with the strongest activity expected near Joliet, Kankakee, and Watseka through 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a storm cell moving northeast at 20 mph is producing brief downpours, lightning strikes, and gusty winds between 35 to 45 mph. The risk zone includes Aurora, Ottawa, and areas east of I-55, where small hail and downed branches may briefly impact travel. Most of northern Illinois will remain dry, but storms that develop in the blue-shaded zone may intensify quickly.

Drivers along I-57 and U.S. 52 should watch for rapidly reduced visibility from downpours and cloud-to-ground lightning. Outdoor activities south of the city should be postponed, and residents are advised to stay indoors if thunder is heard nearby.

The threat is expected to diminish after sunset, though isolated activity could linger through mid-evening. Another update will be issued if conditions escalate.
