CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fall’s chill made an early entrance across east-central Illinois Friday, with patchy frost brushing low-lying fields east of I-57. Temperatures dipped into the upper 30s before dawn, creating a crisp start for morning commuters and early risers.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the brief cold snap will ease quickly. Sunshine and light winds are expected through the weekend, with highs rebounding into the low and mid-70s. No hazardous weather is anticipated after Friday morning. Drivers along I-57 and rural county roads should still use caution where frost lingers on bridges and shaded areas.

By Saturday, a warm ridge builds in from the Plains, pushing highs to around 73 degrees. Sunday looks nearly perfect for pumpkin patches, football games, and outdoor leaf-viewing, with clear skies and light winds. Columbus Day could reach the lower 80s before another gradual cooldown midweek.

Residents are urged to keep early-morning plants and garden vegetation covered through Friday morning, especially in rural zones east of Champaign and along the Vermilion and Edgar county lines. Cooler air may return briefly next week, but no freeze warnings are expected at this time.

Farmers and outdoor workers will enjoy several dry, sunny days ideal for late-harvest activities, but cool dawns will persist. Expect breezy afternoons and crisp, starry nights through midweek — classic mid-October weather across east-central Illinois.
