Joliet, IL – A major traffic shift at the I-80 interchange begins tonight, impacting drivers on northbound I-55. Starting at 8 p.m., I-55 from U.S. Route 6 to I-80 will transition to a new traffic pattern.
According to I-80 Will, the northbound I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80 will close at 1 a.m. Drivers must follow a detour directing them to westbound I-80 before re-entering on southbound I-55 to access eastbound I-80. At least one northbound I-55 lane will remain open, and I-55 southbound will not be affected.
Officials say the ramp and lane closures will end by 5 a.m. Thursday when the new pattern takes effect. However, weather conditions and cold temperatures may impact the schedule.
Authorities urge drivers to stay alert, follow detour signs, and allow extra travel time. These changes are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and traffic flow.
