Wilmington, IL – A wrong-way driver caused a major head-on collision Friday night, shutting down I-55 southbound near mile marker 236.

According to officials, a car collided head-on with a semi-truck around 10:15 p.m. The crash caused major damage, leaving one person trapped inside their vehicle. Emergency crews from Wilmington and Braidwood Fire Departments worked to extricate the victim.

LifeStar medical helicopter was requested to the scene for what authorities described as serious injuries. Traffic on I-55 southbound was halted as first responders secured the area and began rescue operations.

The incident involved a wrong-way driver, though additional details about the driver or passengers have not been released. The crash remains under investigation.
