Lincoln, IL – Strong winds are sweeping across Central Illinois this morning as a cold front pushes through the region, bringing gusts of 40 to 50 mph and a sharp drop in temperatures, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Lincoln.
A Wind Advisory remains in effect until noon Wednesday, with west-to-northwest winds sustained between 20 and 30 mph and occasional gusts topping 50 mph. The strongest winds are expected late in the morning before gradually easing by early afternoon.
Forecasters note a 20–40% chance of brief snow bursts accompanying the front. These could briefly reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less, particularly in open areas and rural stretches along Interstates 55, 57, and 72.
The NWS warns that high-profile vehicles, including trucks and vans, may experience difficulty maintaining control in crosswinds. Additionally, unsecured outdoor items—such as decorations, trash cans, or patio furniture—could be blown around or damaged.
Residents are urged to drive with caution, especially if snow begins to mix in, and to secure any loose objects outside. Cooler conditions will settle in for the remainder of the day, with highs dropping into the 30s and overnight lows in the 20s.
Another round of light snow is possible Thursday night into Friday, followed by much colder weekend air, with wind chills dipping near zero across Central Illinois.
