Madison, IL – Commuters in St. Clair County should prepare for major traffic delays starting Monday, Sept. 15, as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) begins bridge maintenance on Interstate 55/70.

According to IDOT, two westbound lanes between Illinois 203 and Exchange Avenue will close beginning at 5 a.m. Monday. The work is expected to last 10 days, with all lanes scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, weather permitting.

The closures are necessary for bridge maintenance in the Metro East corridor, a heavily traveled route connecting Madison County and St. Clair County with the St. Louis metro area. IDOT warns drivers to expect long delays during peak travel hours and strongly encourages the use of alternate routes.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed, stay alert for changing conditions, and obey posted construction signs while traveling through the work zone. IDOT also cautions against using mobile devices when approaching the construction area.

For real-time updates, drivers can follow @IDOTDistrict8 on X or check IDOT’s traveler information map on GettingAroundIllinois.com.
