Memphis, TN – Cold rain will overspread the Mid-South on Thursday, and for areas along and north of I-40, a brief switch to light snow, sleet, or freezing rain is possible late in the day as temperatures fall below freezing, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.
Light rainfall is expected to move in from the south during the morning and early afternoon. By late afternoon, a shallow layer of cold air descending from the north will increase the chances for a wintry mix, mainly affecting counties such as Jonesboro, Blytheville, Covington, Brownsville, Jackson, and parts of northern Shelby County.
Forecast guidance shows:
- 20–40% chance of light snow north of I-40
- 20–45% chance of light ice accumulations, also focused north of the interstate
- The Memphis metro itself is on the lower end of the risk, with most precipitation expected to remain liquid
Any snow or ice amounts are expected to be very light, but even small accumulations of freezing rain can cause elevated surfaces such as bridges, overpasses, and flyovers to become slick.
The NWS emphasizes that impacts should be minimal, but travelers from Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning should remain aware of changing road conditions—especially in the northern suburbs and rural routes.
Temperatures will dip into the upper 20s to low 30s overnight, keeping any lingering moisture frozen until early Friday. Widespread, major winter impacts are not expected for the Mid-South.
More updates will be issued Thursday morning as the colder air and precipitation overlap becomes clearer.
