Raleigh, NC – Gusty southwest winds will make for a blustery day across central North Carolina, with the National Weather Service (NWS) Raleigh forecasting wind gusts between 30 and 35 mph this afternoon before easing near sunset.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 40s to mid-50s, bringing mild but windy conditions across Wake, Durham, and Johnston Counties. Skies will remain partly sunny, but the gusty winds could cause minor travel difficulties and blow around unsecured outdoor objects, such as holiday decorations and lightweight furniture.
“Southwest winds of 30 to 35 mph will be common this afternoon, especially in open areas,” forecasters said early Wednesday. “Winds should gradually diminish toward sunset.”
Motorists driving along Interstate 40, U.S. Highway 64, and I-95 should be prepared for sudden gusts, particularly when crossing elevated bridges or passing larger vehicles. The NWS recommends using extra caution when driving high-profile vehicles and securing any loose outdoor items that could be carried by the wind.
Overnight, temperatures are expected to fall into the 30s, with calmer conditions returning by early Thursday. Winds will shift slightly to the northwest as a weak front moves through the region, leading to cooler and clearer weather late week.
No precipitation is expected, but the combination of gusty winds and mild air could create localized fire weather concerns in dry areas. Residents should avoid outdoor burning until winds subside.
