Austin, Texas – A dangerous stretch of winter weather could grip much of central Texas beginning late Friday night, bringing icy roads, potential power outages, and life-threatening cold through Sunday morning. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, especially overnight and during the early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning for northern portions of south central Texas. Light to moderate accumulations of ice and sleet are likely, with the Hill Country potentially seeing wintry precipitation as early as around midnight Saturday. Along the I-35 corridor, including Austin, Georgetown, San Marcos, and New Braunfels, icy conditions could develop by daybreak Saturday.
Bridges and overpasses across Travis, Williamson, Hays, Comal, and surrounding counties are expected to become slick first. Ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may lead to scattered power outages, while dangerously cold temperatures Saturday night into Monday morning could damage unprotected pipes and threaten livestock.
Emergency officials urge residents to complete preparations ahead of the storm, avoid non-essential travel, and ensure homes and vehicles are ready for prolonged cold. Those who must travel should carry winter emergency supplies and allow extra time.
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases in ice impacts and cold intensity.
