Des Moines, IA – A major winter storm is set to blanket much of Iowa starting Friday evening, with heavy snow, dangerous roads, and whiteout conditions expected to last through early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

The Winter Storm Warning covers nearly all of central and southern Iowa—including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Mason City, Ottumwa, and Newton—with snow totals ranging from 8 to 13 inches in the hardest-hit areas. Southern counties such as Wapello, Clarke, Decatur, and Wayne could also see freezing drizzle adding to the hazard.

Forecasters warn that travel will be “very difficult to impossible”, particularly along Interstates 35, 80, and 380, where heavy snow is expected to reduce visibility and quickly cover roadways. The storm will have major impacts on post-Thanksgiving travel, potentially stranding motorists or delaying returns home through the weekend.

Snow will begin late Friday afternoon in western Iowa, spreading eastward by evening. The heaviest snowfall is expected Friday night through Saturday, tapering off early Sunday morning.

Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights. For updated road conditions, travelers can visit 511ia.org.
