Pueblo, Colorado – Hot, dry, and windy conditions will rapidly increase wildfire risk across southern Colorado by Wednesday afternoon, with any spark capable of spreading quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect Wednesday afternoon into the evening as relative humidity drops as low as 10% and west winds gust up to 30 mph. These conditions, combined with near-record heat, create a critical window for fast-moving fires across the I-25 corridor, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Trinidad.

High temperatures are expected to climb well above normal, with Pueblo forecast to reach near 91°F and Colorado Springs pushing into the 80s. Dry fuels and strong winds will make fire control difficult, especially in open areas along Highway 50 and Interstate 25.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activity that could create sparks. Even small ignitions could spread rapidly under these conditions.

The fire risk will begin to ease later Wednesday night as winds decrease, but elevated concerns may persist into Thursday with continued warm and dry weather. Additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen.
