Hutchinson, Kan. – Rising water along Cow Creek has shut down key roads near Hutchinson, where floodwaters are expected to remain a danger through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the river stage measured 10.9 feet Thursday afternoon and is forecast to crest near 11.3 feet by early Friday. Flood stage is considered 9.5 feet, meaning Cow Creek is already well above safe levels.
At 11.5 feet, water covers 82nd Avenue between Wilson and Pennington roads, making travel in the area hazardous. Drivers in Reno and Rice counties are urged to avoid all flooded roadways and never attempt to go around barricades. Nearly two feet of moving water is enough to sweep away vehicles.
Moderate flooding will continue until waters recede below flood stage Saturday evening. Emergency officials warn residents to stay alert as additional road closures could occur if water levels climb higher.
Flood warnings remain in effect through the weekend, with the next update expected overnight.
