Houston, TX – A hurricane warning has been issued for parts of Texas as Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to make landfall near Matagorda Bay early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane. The National Weather Service Houston-Galveston has issued multiple alerts, including a Hurricane Watch for Galveston Island, ahead of the storm’s arrival.
According to the US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston, areas along and south of I-10 are under Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings. Beryl is predicted to bring strong winds of 75 to 85 mph within the next 36 hours. Additionally, a Storm Surge Warning is in effect for the Texas coast, with forecasts of 4 to 6 feet of inundation. The heavy rain associated with Beryl could result in 5 to 10 inches of rainfall, potentially more in isolated areas, prompting a Flood Watch for regions along and west of I-45.
The NWS reports that outer rainbands from Beryl will start impacting the area this afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall expected overnight into Monday. These rainbands may also produce brief tornadoes, adding to the severe weather threats.
Residents along the coast, from the north entrance of Padre Island National Seashore to High Island, are advised to follow any evacuation orders issued by local officials due to the life-threatening storm surge. The NWS highlights that flash and urban flooding are expected across portions of the middle and upper Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas through Monday night, with river flooding likely due to the heavy rain.
