Nassau, Bahamas – Residents across the Bahamas are facing life-threatening conditions as hurricane-force winds and towering seas surge into the region today. The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued a hurricane warning, with winds topping 120 mph in parts of the Atlantic east of the islands and seas climbing above 35 feet.
According to the National Weather Service, conditions are expected to intensify tonight with sustained winds between 90 and 110 knots east of 73W and dangerous surf pounding the Bahamian coast. Visibility on the water may drop below one nautical mile as heavy rain bands sweep through the islands.
Officials warn of widespread power outages, coastal flooding, and impassable roads in low-lying areas, especially on New Providence, Grand Bahama, and Abaco. Travel by sea is considered impossible, and residents are urged to remain indoors, secure property, and avoid shoreline activity until conditions ease.
By Tuesday, hurricane-force winds will continue across much of the northern Bahamas before weakening into tropical storm strength midweek. Seas, however, will remain hazardous through Friday, keeping marine operations suspended and coastal flooding threats elevated.
