The National Weather Service in Columbia has issued warnings for considerable to potentially catastrophic flooding across southern Georgia and South Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service, Debby is expected to stall near the South Carolina coast this week, causing excessive rainfall. Nearly 70% of flood fatalities occur when people attempt to drive through floodwaters. Residents are urged to heed the warning, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

The weather forecast indicates heavy rainfall beginning today, with an 85% chance of precipitation. Tuesday’s rainfall is predicted to be even more intense, with a 90% chance of rain, followed by continued rainfall through Wednesday and Thursday. The excessive rainfall risk maps show elevated to extreme threat levels, particularly in areas such as Augusta, Aiken, and Orangeburg.
