Shreveport, LA – Hurricane Beryl continues to be a strong Category 5 hurricane this morning as it works through the Caribbean. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Shreveport, Louisiana, reported that Beryl maintains wind speeds of up to 165 mph, just west of the Windward Islands.

According to the NWS, gradual weakening is expected as Beryl encounters deeper wind shear across the central and western Caribbean. Despite this, significant threats remain for several Caribbean nations. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica, with conditions expected to deteriorate by Wednesday. Additionally, a Tropical Storm Warning is issued for the south coast of Hispaniola, and a Hurricane Watch is in place for the Cayman Islands.

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding are anticipated across Jamaica, leading to possible evacuation orders and emergency preparations. Interests in Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula, Cuba, and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico should closely monitor Beryl’s progress, as additional watches and warnings may be necessary later today or Wednesday.
