HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Storms are expected across northeast Alabama this afternoon, but the bigger story will be a sharp drop in temperatures as cooler air filters in to start the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, scattered thunderstorms will develop mainly east of Interstate 65 through late Sunday, with a 30% chance of rain in areas near Fort Payne, Scottsboro, and Gadsden. Once storms push out, a cold front will send drier air into the Tennessee Valley.
Highs Sunday will still reach the upper 80s to near 90, but by Monday, temperatures will fall into the upper 70s. The cooling trend continues Tuesday, when many spots from Florence to Huntsville will stay in the mid-70s under partly cloudy skies. Overnight lows will dip into the mid-50s by midweek, giving Alabama its first real taste of fall.
Drivers should be alert for wet roads this afternoon in Jackson and DeKalb counties, but conditions improve quickly after sundown. With cooler mornings on the way, residents are advised to check on outdoor pets and prepare for a noticeable chill early this week.
The National Weather Service says temperatures will rebound slightly by Thursday, with highs back near 80 degrees, but another front may bring reinforcing cool air next weekend.
