Huntsville, AL – The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Freeze Watch for much of north Alabama and the Tennessee Valley, in effect Sunday evening through Monday morning, as the first blast of Arctic air this season moves into the region.

Temperatures are forecast to drop into the mid-20s to low 30s overnight Sunday, with wind chills falling into the teens. The cold will persist into early next week, with another frigid morning expected Tuesday, before conditions gradually warm through midweek.

Cities including Huntsville, Florence, Cullman, Russellville, and Fort Payne are expected to experience subfreezing temperatures capable of damaging unprotected pipes and vegetation. Monday’s highs will only reach the upper 30s to low 40s, with overnight lows near 20°F by Tuesday morning.

Officials urge residents to take precautions to protect pets, pipes, and plants. The NWS also reminds the public to check on elderly neighbors, keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable items, and dress in layers if venturing outdoors.
