HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Strong afternoon thunderstorms are likely across much of North Alabama Wednesday, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall. The National Weather Service in Huntsville warns that storms could disrupt travel and outdoor activities, particularly during the late afternoon and evening commute.
According to the agency, thunderstorm probabilities in Huntsville and surrounding cities such as Madison, Athens, and Decatur climb to 55% by Wednesday afternoon, the highest risk of the week. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, especially where heavy downpours persist.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid open fields during lightning activity, and delay non-essential travel during peak storm hours. Drivers should watch for ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during sudden downpours.
Temperatures will remain in the low 90s, but high humidity will push heat index values close to 100°F, adding to the discomfort. While storm chances taper slightly Thursday, the region is expected to remain unsettled through the end of the week.
