HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A warm and unstable air mass will push high temperatures into the upper 80s and lower 90s today across northern Alabama, setting the stage for scattered thunderstorms east of Interstate 65 by this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, areas west of I-65 will stay mostly dry with highs near 90 degrees, while locations east of the interstate — including Scottsboro, Fort Payne, and Gadsden — face a 20 to 60 percent chance of showers and storms developing through the evening.

The greatest risk will come during peak heating hours, when strong updrafts may trigger heavy downpours and frequent lightning. Drivers on U.S. 72 and I-59 should be prepared for sudden visibility reductions and wet roads during the afternoon commute.

While severe weather is not expected, forecasters caution that storms could briefly intensify. Residents east of I-65 should keep mobile devices charged and move indoors when thunder is heard.

Storm chances taper off overnight, but the warm and humid pattern continues into the weekend, with more scattered rain possible.
