Huntsville, AL – A powerful geomagnetic storm is lighting up skies across much of the United States, and northern lights could be visible over Alabama tonight — an extremely rare event for the Deep South.

According to the US National Weather Service Huntsville and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, current conditions remain at G3 (Strong) with potential to intensify to G4 (Severe) as another coronal mass ejection (CME) impacts Earth. The heightened activity means auroras may again extend far south into states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.

Forecasters say skies will remain mostly clear overnight, providing an opportunity for viewing between 9 p.m. and midnight, especially in northern Alabama and rural areas away from city lights. Those with an open view of the northern horizon could spot faint green or red glows if the storm remains strong through the evening.

The NOAA warns that while the geomagnetic storm may cause minor disruptions to satellite communications and power systems, its most visible effect will be the aurora show sweeping across much of North America.
