HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Afternoon storms could bring lightning, gusty winds, and brief downpours to northwest Alabama today, adding to already hot conditions with highs in the low 90s.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, there is a 20 to 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with the best coverage expected across Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, and Limestone counties through this afternoon and evening. Storms may be isolated but could intensify quickly, producing dangerous lightning and erratic wind gusts.

Motorists on Interstate 65 and U.S. 72 may face sudden reduced visibility from heavy rainfall, while outdoor events could be disrupted by fast-developing thunderstorms. The weather service advises residents to move indoors when thunder is heard, noting that lightning remains the greatest risk with today’s storms.

Heat remains another concern, with humidity driving “feels-like” temperatures into the upper 90s. Residents are urged to stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heating hours.

The threat for storms will diminish later tonight, but more unsettled weather is possible through the weekend as humidity levels stay high.
