Shelter Cove, California – Mountain roads above 2,000 feet in southwestern Humboldt County could become impassable after 10 p.m. tonight as heavy snow and 45 mph wind gusts sweep into the region through Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 10 p.m. tonight until 4 p.m. Wednesday for elevations above 2,000 feet. Snow totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected, with strong winds capable of downing tree limbs and causing scattered power outages.
Mattole Road and Shelter Cove Road are among the routes most likely to see slick conditions, falling trees and possible closures. Gusty winds combined with accumulating snow may sharply reduce visibility, especially overnight into Tuesday morning.
Residents are urged to delay travel and stay indoors if possible. If driving is unavoidable, carry emergency supplies including food, water and a flashlight, and check 511 for updated road conditions. Avoid touching downed power lines and report outages immediately. Hazardous conditions will persist through Wednesday afternoon, with additional updates possible if snowfall intensifies.
