Valmy, Nevada – A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded early Wednesday north of Interstate 80 in northern Nevada, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.
The earthquake struck at approximately 7:50 p.m. PST Tuesday (3:50 UTC Wednesday), with the epicenter located about 59 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of Valmy, in a remote area of Humboldt County near the Oregon–Idaho border. The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 8.4 kilometers (about 5.2 miles), classifying it as a shallow seismic event.
Seismologists say shallow earthquakes are more likely to be felt near the epicenter, even at moderate magnitudes. ShakeMap data indicates light shaking, generally categorized as intensity IV, across parts of northern Nevada, including areas north of I-80 and portions of rural Humboldt and Elko counties.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s PAGER system, the earthquake is rated “green,” indicating a low likelihood of damage or casualties. No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported as of early Wednesday, and emergency management officials have not issued any alerts related to the event.
The epicentral area lies within a seismically active region of the northern Basin and Range Province, where earthquakes are relatively common due to ongoing crustal extension. The fault plane solution suggests normal faulting, consistent with regional tectonic patterns.
Residents in sparsely populated areas near the Nevada–Oregon border may have felt a brief jolt or rolling motion. The USGS “Did You Feel It?” system had not received widespread public reports early Wednesday, likely due to the remote location of the quake.
Transportation corridors, including Interstate 80, were not reported to be affected. No disruptions to utilities or infrastructure were immediately known.
Seismologists note that aftershocks are possible following moderate earthquakes, though most are typically smaller and cause little additional impact. Residents are encouraged to review earthquake safety guidance and report shaking experiences through official channels.
