Albany, NY – Residents across eastern New York and western New England should prepare for a chance of isolated severe thunderstorms this evening, Thursday, September 25, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albany.

Forecasters say the greatest risk extends from the Mid-Hudson Valley into the Berkshires and northwest Connecticut. The storms are most likely to occur between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., bringing the potential for heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the NWS, rainfall totals could range from a half inch up to 1.5 inches across much of the region, with isolated pockets seeing as much as 2 inches. Embedded thunderstorms may contribute to higher amounts in some locations. Ponding of water on roads and poor-drainage areas remains possible.

While the overall severe weather threat is low, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a marginal risk, meaning isolated severe storms cannot be ruled out. Tornadoes are unlikely but not impossible.

Rain chances are expected to decrease late tonight and into Friday. The forecast trends drier through the weekend and into early next week, with only small chances of isolated showers.

The NWS advises residents with outdoor plans or those on the water to stay alert for changing conditions and seek safe shelter if thunderstorms develop.
