Newburgh, N.Y. – Heavy snow will begin falling by 1 p.m. Sunday across Orange and Putnam counties, with 10 to 14 inches expected before the storm ends around 6 p.m. Monday. Wind gusts up to 40 mph Sunday evening through Monday afternoon could bring down tree limbs and power lines, creating scattered power outages and near-whiteout road conditions during the Monday morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for both counties. The combination of heavy snowfall rates and gusty winds will significantly reduce visibility and make travel very difficult to impossible at times.
Road conditions will deteriorate rapidly Sunday evening.
Interstate 84, Route 17, and the Taconic State Parkway could see snow-covered lanes and blowing snow, especially overnight into early Monday. Orange & Rockland Utilities warned that the weight of wet snow combined with 40 mph gusts increases the risk of downed wires.
Residents should delay travel and prepare for potential power outages by charging devices and stocking essentials now. The strongest winds are expected Sunday evening through Monday afternoon, prolonging impacts even after snowfall rates ease.
Snow and wind impacts will continue through early Monday evening, and the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.
