White Plains, NY – Wind gusts reaching 50 mph are sweeping snow across northern Westchester and Rockland counties this afternoon, dropping visibility below a quarter mile and creating whiteout conditions ahead of the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday for Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, Northern Middlesex and Northern New London counties in Connecticut, along with Rockland and Northern Westchester counties in New York. Up to 2 additional inches of snow will combine with powerful winds to intensify blowing and drifting.
Travel is deteriorating rapidly along Interstate 87 in Rockland County, Interstate 287 through Westchester and stretches of the Merritt Parkway and I-84 in northern Connecticut. Blowing snow is sharply reducing visibility on bridges, overpasses and open stretches of highway. Secondary roads in Danbury, Waterbury, Stamford’s northern neighborhoods, New City and White Plains are becoming snow covered and slick.
The combination of strong winds and snow-laden branches may bring down tree limbs and power lines, raising the risk of scattered outages across both states. Utility crews are monitoring conditions as winds peak through late afternoon.
Officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only. If travel is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit and stay with your vehicle if stranded. Blizzard conditions are expected to ease after 6 p.m., though hazardous road conditions may persist into the night.
