Kokomo, IN – Drivers in Howard County should prepare for a major traffic change as northbound U.S. 31 in Kokomo will close beginning on or after Wednesday, October 8, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The closure is part of a concrete pavement repair project expected to last through mid-November.
According to INDOT, the northbound lanes will be closed between the State Road 931 interchanges on the north and south ends of Kokomo. During this time, southbound U.S. 31 will reopen in advance of the northbound closure to help balance traffic flow. Crews will continue work daily, though schedules may shift due to weather conditions.
During the closure, drivers are instructed to use the official detour along State Road 931, which runs parallel to U.S. 31 through Kokomo. The detour will be marked to help guide motorists.
INDOT is urging drivers to plan for extra travel time, reduce speed in work zones, and avoid distractions while navigating the detour routes.
The project is expected to wrap up by mid-November, restoring full access to U.S. 31 before the holiday travel season.
