Houston, Texas – A dangerous winter storm is set to grip Southeast Texas beginning Saturday evening, raising serious concerns for travel, power reliability, and public safety across the Houston metro and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston and Galveston, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday for Harris, Liberty, Waller, Fort Bend, Austin, Colorado, and Wharton counties. Heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with ice accumulations reaching up to two-tenths of an inch in some areas.
Statewide impacts are expected to center on transportation. Ice-covered roads, especially bridges and overpasses, could become nearly impassable. TxDOT crews are preparing for rapid icing on major corridors including Interstate 10, U.S. 59, and Highway 290. Emergency managers warn that even light ice can trigger widespread crashes in the region.
Within the Houston area, neighborhoods from Sugar Land and Missouri City to Pasadena, Baytown, and Cypress could see tree damage and scattered power outages as ice builds on lines and branches. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, charge devices ahead of time, and have flashlights, food, and water ready.
The warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories or extensions are possible as the storm evolves. Residents should monitor local alerts and check road conditions through 511 before heading out.
