Houston, Texas – A stubborn stretch of late-summer heat is gripping southeast Texas, with highs near 90 degrees holding through early next week and only limited relief from spotty showers. The warmth is raising concerns for outdoor workers and football fans heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office, temperatures will remain in the upper 80s to near 90 through Tuesday, several degrees above the seasonal norm. Humidity will keep heat indices in the mid-90s during peak afternoon hours, especially for areas along I-45 and inside the Beltway. Winds from the northeast may gust up to 20 mph Saturday, but widespread cooling is not expected.

A weak disturbance could trigger isolated showers Sunday afternoon, with a higher chance for scattered rain and thunderstorms Monday into Tuesday. NWS forecasters note rain chances are highest along coastal counties, including Galveston, Brazoria, and Chambers. While rainfall totals will be light, brief downpours could slow drivers on I-10, US-59, and the West Loop during evening commutes.

Emergency managers are urging residents to take heat precautions through the weekend. Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activity during afternoon hours. Those with evening events, including high school football games, should plan for muggy conditions with temperatures in the mid-80s at kickoff. Power demand will stay elevated as air conditioners run heavily, so utilities recommend conserving energy where possible.
