Houston, TX – Patchy freezing fog early Wednesday is creating hazardous travel conditions on major roadways.

According to the National Weather Service Houston–Galveston, areas of patchy fog developed early Wednesday morning, with a few locations reporting fog becoming dense across the Houston metro area. Forecasters warned that where temperatures dip below 32 degrees, fog droplets may freeze on surfaces, creating isolated slick spots, particularly on lightly traveled roads and bridges.

Roadways potentially affected include Interstate 10, Interstate 45, US-59, and sections of Beltway 8, especially during the early morning commute. While the fog is not expected to be widespread or long-lasting, officials urge drivers to remain alert for sudden visibility drops and isolated black ice, which can be difficult to detect before sunrise.

The National Weather Service recommends motorists use low-beam headlights in fog, reduce speed, and increase following distance. Drivers are also advised to use extra caution on overpasses, rural connectors, and shaded areas where freezing conditions may persist longer.

Once the fog dissipates, conditions are expected to improve, with another chilly but dry day across the region. Forecast highs Wednesday are expected to range from the upper 40s to mid-50s, remaining below normal, with light north to northwest winds.

Looking ahead, temperatures are forecast to trend warmer through Thursday, before the next cold front moves through Thursday night into Friday. That front is expected to bring a wind shift and slight rain chances near the coast, followed by cooler conditions heading into the weekend. No wintry precipitation is expected with the upcoming front.

Early-morning commuters, students, and shift workers should allow extra travel time and monitor local road conditions before departing.
