Houston, TX – Southeast Texas residents are being urged to use caution Tuesday, September 30, as hot, dry weather brings an elevated risk of wildfires and poor air quality across the region.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston office, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-90s in Houston, Galveston, and surrounding areas, with overnight lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. The dry conditions, combined with warm air, are increasing the potential for fire starts. Residents are asked to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with activities that could spark flames.

In addition, Tuesday has been declared an Ozone Action Day for Houston, Galveston, and nearby counties. Atmospheric conditions are expected to produce higher levels of ozone pollution, which may be unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Officials recommend limiting outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours and reducing driving when possible.

Rain chances remain very low through midweek, with only a slight chance of showers returning by late Friday into the weekend, particularly near the coast. Until then, hot afternoons and mild nights will dominate the forecast.

The NWS reminds residents to stay weather-aware, protect their health during poor air quality events, and take steps to reduce wildfire risks during this extended stretch of dry weather.
