Houston, TX — A Winter Storm Watch and Extreme Cold Watch are in effect for Houston and much of Southeast Texas as freezing rain and dangerous cold threaten the region this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Houston–Galveston office, the Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday through Sunday afternoon, with freezing rain possible, especially in areas along and north of Interstate 10, including the Houston metro area. Forecasters warn that ice accumulations of one-tenth of an inch or more could lead to hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages.

In addition to wintry precipitation, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through early next week for all of Southeast Texas. Wind chills are expected to fall into the 5° to 15° range, with prolonged sub-freezing temperatures possible. The coldest conditions are expected Sunday night into Monday.

The National Weather Service cautioned that freezing rain could make roads dangerously slick, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Power outages may occur if ice accumulates on power lines and trees, and cold temperatures could allow icy conditions to persist even after precipitation ends.

Residents are urged to prepare now by protecting pipes, plants, pets, and people from the cold. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel if conditions deteriorate, charging electronic devices, and having emergency supplies ready in case of power outages.

The Weather Service emphasized that forecast details may change and that the Winter Storm Watch could be expanded or upgraded as confidence increases.

Houston residents should continue monitoring forecast updates through Friday and the weekend as the winter weather threat develops.
