Houston, TX – Freezing temperatures are expected to impact the Houston metro area late Sunday night into Monday morning, prompting a Freeze Warning for much of southeast Texas.
According to the National Weather Service Houston-Galveston, the warning is in effect from midnight through 9 a.m. Monday, with low temperatures forecast to range between 27 and 32 degrees across Houston and surrounding counties. The cold snap could bring the coldest temperatures some areas have seen so far this season.
Forecasters warn that temperatures dipping below freezing may damage sensitive plants, cause unprotected outdoor pipes to freeze, and pose risks to pets left outdoors. Residents are encouraged to follow the “4 P’s” of cold weather safety: People, Pets, Plants, and Pipes.
The Freeze Warning covers the Houston metro area as well as surrounding counties, including portions of the Brazos Valley and Coastal Plains. Officials note that while some northern counties have already experienced freezing temperatures earlier this season, the Houston area remains vulnerable to impacts due to limited cold acclimation.
Drivers heading out early Monday should also be alert for patchy frost on bridges and overpasses, particularly in outlying or less-traveled areas. While widespread ice is not expected, colder surfaces could become slick during the early morning hours.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing later Monday morning as sunshine returns and winds shift. Afternoon highs should rebound into more comfortable territory, bringing relief after the brief but impactful cold snap.
Utility providers recommend checking outdoor faucets, insulating exposed pipes, and ensuring space heaters are used safely indoors. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors or those without reliable heating.
Stay tuned to local forecasts and alerts for any updates as conditions develop overnight.
