Texas – A humid breeze pushes low clouds across Houston as flashes of lightning briefly light up the sky. Storms are developing, and travel conditions may change quickly through the day.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase by early afternoon, with the greatest coverage later today and into tonight. According to the National Weather Service in Houston, storms may produce brief heavy rain and localized ponding on roadways. Patchy dense fog is expected late tonight, especially near waterways and low-lying neighborhoods, reducing visibility for early travelers.
Drivers along I-45, I-10, and Loop 610 should plan for slower travel during heavier downpours and fog-prone hours. Wet pavement combined with low visibility could create sudden slowdowns. Allow extra time if heading out late tonight or early Sunday.
A noticeable weather shift arrives Sunday as a cold front sweeps through the region. Clouds linger early, then gradually clear as cooler, drier air moves in. Afternoon temperatures fall into the upper 50s to near 60, with gusty north winds making it feel cooler than recent days.
Sunday night turns crisp by Houston standards. Lows drop to the mid-30s, especially outside the urban core. Sensitive plants may need protection, and pets should be brought indoors. The cooler air holds into Monday, when sunshine returns but highs remain near 52 degrees.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures rebound into the 60s and low 70s, with mostly dry conditions. Another weak system midweek could bring spotty showers, but no major cold is expected immediately afterward.
This pattern marks a classic December transition for southeast Texas. Warm, stormy air gives way to brief winter chills, then a steady warm-up.
