Houston, Texas – An Arctic front sweeping into Southeast Texas is set to bring dangerous road conditions through Monday, with icy bridges and black ice posing major hazards across the Houston metro area and beyond.

According to the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston, freezing rain may begin Friday night, with icy conditions stretching into Sunday and a deep freeze likely Sunday night into Monday. Houston has a 95% chance of temperatures dipping below 32°F and a 63% chance of plunging below 24°F. Areas north of Houston, including College Station and Huntsville, face up to a 55% chance of temps dropping below 15°F, increasing the risk of black ice and power outages.

Travel will be especially hazardous along major roadways including I-45, I-10, and U.S. 290. Elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses will freeze first, with any moisture refreezing Sunday night. Ice accumulation may also down trees and power lines, particularly from Columbus to Conroe and up toward Cleveland.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible, protect exposed pipes, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Pets and plants should be brought indoors, and faucets should be left dripping during overnight lows.

Cold, icy conditions may linger into Tuesday morning, with more advisories likely as the system evolves.
